Apple Reportedly Cancels Foldable MacBook Project

Apple may have decided to cancel one of its most ambitious foldable device projects. The company has been linked with a large foldable device that was expected to combine features of an iPad and MacBook. However, a new report suggests that the project may no longer be in development.

Apple Foldable MacBook Project Reportedly Cancelled

Apple’s foldable plans have been discussed for several years, with reports pointing towards a larger device featuring a flexible display. Earlier reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggested that Apple was working on a foldable iPad with a display of around 20 inches when fully opened.

The project was also reportedly considered a priority under John Ternus, who was Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering before becoming CEO. However, the device was always expected to be an experimental product, meaning Apple could change its plans before a commercial launch.

According to a recent research note from Omdia, cited by 9to5Mac, Apple’s plans for a foldable MacBook have reportedly been cancelled. The report appears to refer to the same large foldable device mentioned in earlier reports.

Large Foldable Apple Device Was Expected Later

The reported Apple foldable MacBook was expected to use a display measuring between 16.1 and 18 inches when opened. Its design could have offered a larger working area while keeping the device compact when folded.

The launch timeline had reportedly changed several times. While an early launch was once expected around 2026, later reports suggested that Apple could delay an 18-inch-class foldable device until around 2029.

For now, Apple’s foldable strategy appears to be focused mainly on smartphones. The company is reportedly preparing its first foldable iPhone, which could arrive as part of its future iPhone lineup.

If the foldable MacBook project has indeed been cancelled, Apple may take a more cautious approach towards larger foldable devices before bringing another product to market.
